One-Third of Americans Spent Less Money Celebrating Halloween this Year

Nearly half of consumers purchased Halloween "treats" at grocery stores

Flemington, NJ, November 2, 2009 – A new national media study among 202 viewers of a video news clip on Halloween spending revealed that one-third of responders (31%) spent less money celebrating Halloween this year in comparison to last year.

The study was conducted by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website from October 29-November 2, to obtain viewers’ perceptions of a recent news clip on Halloween spending. To view interest curves and detailed results go to: www.mediacurves.com.

The majority of viewers (86%) reported that they purchase candy as the “treat” they distribute to trick-or-treaters. Almost half of the respondents (48%) indicated that they purchased treats at grocery stores.

While viewing the video, participants indicated their levels of interest by moving their mouse from left to right on a continuum. The responses were recorded in quarter-second intervals and reported in the form of curves. The participants were also asked to respond to post-viewing questions.

The topic itself wasn't uninteresting, but the reporter was rather annoying and overdone.

The video caught my attention on some parts, but lost it on other points. She had an upbeat personality and clear speaking voice, but didn't catch enough of my attention.

this commercial was not at all relevant to me as i do not celebrate halloween as it has its roots in satanism and i am a christian. the commercial was a little boring.

The host Carrie Long was VERY annoying. Parts of the video were interesting but by the end with the weird attitude and all the gross chewing she lost me.

interesting... I think even in this economy we shouldn't let it affect our children's fun. Every household is cutting back...who can't afford a couple bags of candy. When it's gone, we will just turn the lights out. Sadly. Can't buy like we have in the past years.
